Brief history:
This statement is reflective of the views that many continue to express. To better understand and provide support, it is often helpful to understand history. The Stonewall Riots, which the quote is referring to, started in New York City on June 28, 1969. They occurred after the NYC police raided a gay club, called the Stonewall Inn. During this time, LGBT individuals could be served alcohol but were not allowed to hold hands, kiss, or dance with someone of the same sex. As a result, they would attend gay bars/clubs to avoid harassment, as much as possible. The resulting protests lasted six days and sparked the gay rights movement. The increased awareness following the riots led to the creation of the first group to publicly advocate for equal gay rights, the Gay Liberation Front. Additionally, the first Pride Parade occurred one year later, on June 28, 1970. Today Pride Parades occur all over the world. On June 24, 2016, Former President Barack Obama declared the area where the riots broke out as the first national monument celebrating gay history. There is still a lot of progress to make regarding LGBTQIA+ rights. Locally, advocates are pushing for Governor Sisolak to sign SB 194, making Nevada the 6th state to include LGBTQIA+ people in Civics Education.
