THE NEVADA PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION PRESENTS Improving Cultural Responsiveness with Latinx Clients Presented by Claudia Mejia, Psy.D. 1 Cultural Competency Homestudy CE Credit
Approved for Nevada Psychologists, LCSWs and MFTs. NPA is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. NPA maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
About the Workshop:
Demographic statistics indicate 56.5 million individuals residing in the U.S. identify as Hispanic/Latino (Pew Hispanic Center, 2017). Locally, Nevada shows similar trends in the ethnic makeup of the state; Latinos comprise nearly 20% of the population in Nevada and 30.3% in Clark County (Pew Hispanic Center, 2014). Underutilization of health services by Latina/os exists due to various systemic barriers, including perceived lack of cultural understanding during clinic interactions, increased difficulty establishing rapport with providers, and decreased reception of sufficient information (Ferguson & Candib, 2002). An increased understanding of Latinx cultural values can improve mental health providers’ cultural responsiveness, which may improve client interaction, satisfaction, and, ultimately, increase effective use of clinical services.
Participants will increase their knowledge surrounding specific cultural values shared by many in the Latinx community to assist with improved client interaction and care. Participants will obtain an increased understanding of Latinx cultural values, thereby aiming to improve upon their cultural competence, further develop successful communication, and become more effective in developing relationships with Latinx clients.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this workshop, attendees will be able to: 1) Describe key Latinx cultural values and recognize the role of these values during client 2) Identify at least three barriers to mental health treatment from a decolonial perspective 3) Evaluate their own current clinical approach and relationship with recommended practices such as practice-based evidence and evidence-based practices
